Himani’s Adventure-Filled Romantic Retreat to Ladakh with Thrillophilia
I was wide awake with no trace of sleep in my eyes. How can one actually go to sleep a day before starting the most exciting and adventurous trip of their lives?
But, I knew that I needed some sleep before starting the real adventure. Yet, each time I was trying to close my eyes, my mind started to paint vivid pictures of Ladakh’s snow-capped peaks, the lakes’ crystal clear water and the blissful calm that surrounds it.
On the other hand, I was trying to decide which dress should be worn on which day and how I would pose for the pictures. Also, I was trying to make a list of all the dishes that I must try during the trip.
Evidently, I was too excited for my dream trip to Ladakh. I wanted this to be perfect, not only because it was my dream destination but also because it was going to be the first romantic getaway with my partner.
Immersing in the rich culture of Leh & Ladakh!
As we know, the majority of the travellers sing the praises of Ladakh’s beauty in their blogs. You will get to read about the enchanting landscapes, must-visit locations and what activities you should try there.
However, I intend to share the glimpses of Ladakh’s lesser-known and overlooked treasure, that is, its vibrant and unique culture!
In my opinion, if you have less time and still wish to have the best cultural experience, visit the ancient monasteries of Ladakh. Like us, you can visit the most renowned ones such as Shanti Stupa, Diskit Monastery and Thiksey Monastery.
During our visit to these monasteries, we got to learn so much about the Buddhist culture and even tried meditating. And trust me, it was the most rejuvenating feeling ever! We were also lucky enough to meet one of the monks and got to learn so much from him. One such teaching that striked me the most was:
“I am running because I am in pain.
I am in pain because I am running.”
This simple sentence left a huge impact on me. It means that life is suffering and that suffering comes from our own desires and attachments.
Going ahead, another remarkable cultural encounter awaited us at the Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, a gorgeous gurudwara situated amidst the hills of Ladakh. We offered our prayers and also enjoyed a wholesome langar.
Similarly, we also visited the renowned Chang La Baba Temple while we were at the Chang La Pass. It is a sacred site and is believed to be about a century old.
Whereas, if you have sufficient time, make sure to also explore a few local markets as well as interact with the locals. You will get to know about their daily lifestyle, work culture and see how unique and interesting it is.
Last but not least, make sure you do not miss out on the delicious local dishes of Ladakh. My favourite ones were chhurpi, butter tea and khambir.
A Journey Through the Iconic 3 Idiots Sets!
Another highlight of our trip was our visit to the shooting location of an iconic movie, 3 Idiots- the Druk Padma Karpo School. It is a beautiful school situated amidst the hills and near the stunning Pangong Tso Lake.
We got to meet a few students and were really impressed by the unique educational methods practised here. Additionally, there were vibrant graffiti and paintings on the walls. In fact, some scenes from the movie were painted as well.
We had also visited the SECMOL school in the initial days of our trip. Here, we got to know that 3 Idiots was actually inspired by the founder of this school, Sonam Wangchuck. He was the one to come up with the idea that the regular education system needs a change.
Thrills of Walking on Water……Almost!
Coming to the most adventurous part of the trip- walking on the frozen Pangong Lake!
Practically, I can say now that I have walked on water – just that it was frozen.
Before our activity, we were given a safety briefing from our guide. He taught us how we should keep our feet one by one and that we should stay close at all times.
At first, I was terrified and thought of skipping this but I am so glad I did not. Gripping my partner’s hand tightly, I placed each step cautiously. But after a few moments, my fear vanished and I started to enjoy the experience.
When I was sure that the ice was not going to break, we tried a little dancing as well, took many pictures and even tried skating, though I terribly failed.
Overall, it was quite unique and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thanks to my partner who did not let me give up and made sure I do not miss out on this epic adventure.
A Magical Night Under the Stars!
Now that I have talked about the culture, what places I have visited and my adventurous experiences, let me end my review with a core memory of the trip!
So, we got a chance to camp under the glittering stars of Nubra Valley. Yes! It was one of the most memorable nights and a very special one too! All of us gathered around the campfire to have our dinner.
After the dinner, we also played a few fun games and honestly, this was the day when we properly talked to fellow travellers of our group. We even danced a little and there was an extremely talented person who impressed all of us with his beautiful voice.
While the night ended here for the rest of the travellers, my partner and I decided to make every second count of this precious night. We sat down outside with our hands intertwined with each other and enjoyed stargazing.
The atmosphere was serene, soothing, and wrapped in romance.
Both of us chose to remain silent and simply soak in the calm ambiance around us. It was the most magical night of my life- under the stars of Ladakh!
Breathing the fresh mountain air and glaring at the twinkling stars in the clear skies, I could only think of one sing, my all-time favourite,
“Khoya khoya chand
Khula aasmaan…
Aankhon mein saari raat jaayegi
Tumko bhi kaise neend aayegi…”
